Every Student. One Church. One Mission.
I want to tell you a story that still fuels everything in me. It didn't start with a big organization, a national plan, or a massive budget. It started with students, and it grew because leaders chose to collaborate.
I'm the co-founder of See You at the Pole, and the first spark came from my students, their prayers, their passion for reaching lost peers, their hunger for God, and their bold desire to pray at their schools following a discipleship weekend. But that spark alone would have remained just a spark. It became a movement because someone created space for collaboration.
Before Super Summer (the Texas State Student Leadership School) Chuck Flowers, Youth Evangelism Director for the Baptist General Convention of Texas, gathered about fifteen key youth strategists from across the state. He asked one simple, strategic question:
"How can we follow up Super Summer with a key, actionable strategy?"
He wasn't protecting turf.
He wasn't building his own brand.
He simply said, "Let's figure this out, together."
That conversation birthed See You at the Pole, a completely student-led, student-initiated movement, launched at no cost, that has impacted students for more than thirty-five years.
My students inspired it.
Collaboration carried it farther than any of us imagined.
Churches, denominations, and parachurch ministries linked arms, and the impact spread nationwide.
Here's a part of the story many people don't know:
The following year, the concept was shared at an NNYM national meeting in Colorado Springs. Leaders from churches, denominations, and parachurch organizations heard it, and they didn't hesitate.
They collaborated.
They partnered.
They shared.
They championed.
Because of that unity, churches and denominations across the country were strengthened, parachurch ministries multiplied their effectiveness, and students encountered the love of Jesus in ways that would never have happened alone.
That's what unity can do.
That's what collaboration looks like in real time.
That's what Jesus prayed for when He said, "That they may all be one... so that the world may believe."
The Reality We Must Face
There are real differences across the Body of Christ.
Different beliefs.
Different styles.
Different priorities.
Different viewpoints.
But those differences are not the mission.
Students are the mission.
Jesus is the mission.
If we truly want to reach every student, we must be willing to do whatever it takes-and whatever it takes always begins with unity.
Because even the largest churches can only reach the students who walk through their doors.
What about the students who never will?
The ones without Christian friends.
The ones who feel unseen, unheard, or unwanted?
They won't be reached by any one church or organization alone.
They will be reached only when the Church-capital C-moves as one.
That means:
Churches working with parachurches
Denominations collaborating across lines
Small churches and large churches locking arms
Strategies aligned
Territories surrendered
Egos laid down
A generation prioritized
We are allies against a common enemy.
When we don't work together, students fall through the cracks.
When we do, we move like the mighty army Jesus designed us to be.
Why Collaboration Matters Right Now
Smaller churches matter-strengthen them, and you strengthen entire communities.
Parachurch ministries matter-they reach students churches often can't.
Shared resources matter-a win for one becomes a win for all.
Prayer matters-it unifies hearts and focuses mission.
Relationships matter-collaboration grows where trust is built.
Every student matters-and unity is the only way to reach them all.
I'm passionate about this. I want every leader in youth ministry to hear it. Honestly, I want to shout it loud enough that silos crumble and collaboration becomes the new normal.
Action Steps for Leaders Across the Body of Christ
1. Strengthen smaller churches. Offer training, resources, and support.
2. Build local networks. Collaborate with churches and parachurches in your area.
3. Coordinate calendars. Alignment multiplies impact and reduces competition.
4. Share best practices. Let your wins become someone else's breakthrough.
5. Pray together. Unity begins in prayer long before strategy.
6. Combine strengths. Let each group bring their best to the table.
7. Be an agent of change. Champion collaboration. Challenge silos. Lead Kingdom-first.
The Call to All of Us
See You at the Pole is proof of what God can do when leaders gather, pray, and dream together. Its expansion through NNYM proved it again-unity multiplies impact in ways no single organization ever could.
If we say we want every student reached...
If we truly mean it...
Then we must do whatever it takes.
Together.
Because together, we can.
And together is the only way.
