What helps youth leaders thrive, and stick around?
Research from National Network of Youth Ministries (NNYM) shows most youth leaders serve for only 3 to 5 years before transitioning out. But youth leaders who regularly connect with others in prayer and relationship are twice as likely to stay in ministry long-term.
We believe that when a youth leader is thriving, in their walk with God, their partnerships with others, and in making disciples, students win. But too many leaders today are burning out, dropping out, or barely hanging on.
So, what actually makes a difference?
That's the question we're trying to answer, and we need your help.
Be Part of the First Study of Its Kind in Years
We've launched a nationwide survey to gather insight from youth pastors and student ministry leaders across the country, those serving in churches and in parachurch ministries like YFC, FCA, Young Life, and NNYM.
Here's what we're hoping to learn:
- What's the current average tenure of a youth pastor?
- What factors make a student ministry leader more likely to stay longer?
- Does being part of a youth leader network still make a measurable difference?
Whether you've been in youth ministry for 3 months or 30 years, your voice matters.
The survey takes about 10 minutes and is completely anonymous. Your input will help inform strategies, training, and structures to build a healthier, more sustainable future for youth leaders.
Why This Matters
In 2011, a research study by NNYM and OneHope found that youth leaders involved in networks had 2.5x longer tenure than those who were isolated. That's huge. But that data is outdated, and ministry has changed.
We're partnering again with OneHope and the Great Commission Research Network to revisit that research and dig deeper. This new project, led by youth ministry veteran Steve Cullum, will not only be used in academic circles, it will directly impact the way churches, organizations, and networks support youth leaders going forward.
