Saving Your Sanity During Youth Camp Practical Survival Tips for Youth Leaders and Volunteers

Ronald Long - June 10, 2026

Summer camp season in youth ministry is a magical time.

It is also the time when youth leaders briefly wonder if they should have chosen a calmer career. Something relaxing like lion taming or diffusing explosives.

If you are feeling overwhelmed during youth ministry camp season, take heart. You are not alone. And your sanity is still salvageable.

Here are a few practical tips to help you and your volunteers survive the chaos and actually enjoy the experience.

Embrace the Chaos

Accept this truth early.

Something will go wrong.

A bus might break down. Someone will lose a shoe. A volunteer will have a minor panic attack about schedules or cabin assignments.

It happens every year.

Instead of fighting the chaos, embrace it with humor and perspective. Many of today's camp disasters will become tomorrow's hilarious stories around the campfire.

Prepare Well but Stay Flexible

Good preparation makes a huge difference in youth camps.

Create clear schedules. Build contingency plans. Pack extra snacks. Bring backup supplies for things you know students will forget.

But no matter how well you plan, something unexpected will still happen.

A rainstorm might cancel activities. A spontaneous talent show may appear out of nowhere. Students may invent games that were never part of the schedule.

The best youth leaders plan carefully but hold the schedule loosely.

Care for Your Volunteers

Your volunteers are the backbone of youth ministry camp experiences.

Take care of them.

Provide clear instructions so they know what is expected. Offer plenty of coffee. Surprise them occasionally with chocolate or snacks. Most importantly, let them know how much you appreciate them.

A supported and encouraged volunteer can handle a surprising amount of adolescent chaos.

Create a Sanity Station

Even the best volunteers need a break sometimes.

Consider creating a quiet space reserved for leaders. Stock it with simple essentials like snacks, comfortable chairs, drinks, and maybe even earplugs.

Short moments to recharge can transform overwhelmed leaders into energized and patient camp heroes.

Capture the Memories

Camp weeks create unforgettable moments.

Assign someone to capture photos and videos throughout the week. Be sure to include the funny mishaps and unexpected moments along the way.

After camp, create a highlight video that students and volunteers can watch together.

Laughing about the week later often becomes part of the healing process after an exhausting but meaningful experience.

Surviving Camp Season

Youth ministry camp season can feel intense.

But with preparation, humor, and a lot of grace, it can also become one of the most meaningful parts of the year.

Take care of your volunteers. Stay flexible. Laugh often.

And remember that God often works powerfully in the middle of the chaos. We are praying for you and your students this summer.
