Doubt is such an amazing topic. When I went to college, I knew I had a call to ministry. When the adventure began and ministry got rocky, I doubted everything - my call, God, my worth to the Kingdom, and a multitude of other things. When one thing would go wrong, a flood of doubts would hit me hard. Then the cycle of guilt would appear because I thought I wasn't supposed to doubt. And I definitely wasn't supposed to doubt God. I was a minister. I was the guy telling students the story of Jesus. I was the one trying to be an example to the people of our church.
That's when God showed me something. One of the key leaders Jesus chose was a chronic doubter. Growing up, Thomas was the example of screwing up, but he was not alone in his doubt. All the disciples had a front-row seat for the miracles Jesus performed. Not magic tricks but miracles, and they still had questions. When Jesus was walking on water and Peter called out, "Lord, IF it is you..." (Matthew 14:28). Really? Who else did Peter know who could walk on water!?
I had to realize doubt was only a negative thing if it kept me from looking for the truth. Peter's IF question led him to walk on water, even if only for a short time. Thomas's doubt allowed him to touch the pierced body of the risen Savior. The Roman centurion's doubt led him to proclaim of Jesus, "He was the Son of God" (Matthew 27:54).
Healthy doubt leads us to seek truth, and God is THE truth! If you doubt that - keep looking because He is already there waiting on you. Thank you God for doubters who keep looking for You!
