Here Comes Gen Alpha
Born between 2010 and today, the next wave of young people, Generation Alpha, is making its mark. These are the kids already in elementary and middle school, and the first members of this generation have just started high school.
This is the largest generation the world has ever seen, and will be the focus of youth ministry for the next two decades.
What are these students like? How will youth ministry change to meet their needs? The answers to those questions fill me with hope and expectation.
Forged by Challenges, Driven by Connection
Gen Alpha has been profoundly shaped by the global pandemic. Those formative years of disrupted school and social interactions taught them resilience and the value of real connection.
While they are 'digital natives' with devices in their hands all their lives, these young people crave in-person relationships-and authentic community. They value justice, service, and a faith that genuinely impacts their daily lives.
Their experiences have made them thoughtful, genuine, and curious about the world-and about faith.
Effective Ministry: Four Keys to Reaching Gen Alpha
As youth leaders, we have a unique opportunity to shape the future of ministry to Generation Alpha by addressing their specific needs and desires. Here are four key priorities for effective ministry that will resonate deeply with this generation and create lasting impact:
1. Create Welcoming Spaces
Today's students are searching for belonging and they find it in environments where they feel safe, accepted, and free to be themselves. A warm, inviting space provides the foundation they need to engage with others and explore their faith.
Teenagers who are welcomed, valued and known by name are more likely to stay connected to their church community. Show them that they matter and are part of something bigger than themselves.
2. Provide Opportunities to Serve
Gen Alpha wants a faith that has real-world impact. They're looking for more than games, entertainment or passive experiences; they want to be actively involved in serving others. Justice, compassion, and action resonate strongly with this generation.
Give students a chance to live out their faith and see how it intersects with the needs of the world around them. Whether it's organizing a community clean-up, partnering with local charities, or participating in global mission projects, these opportunities foster a sense of agency and show them how their faith matters.
3. Let Them Lead
This generation will be eager to embrace leadership roles-they just need encouragement and guidance. Many of these students have a strong desire to influence others and contribute meaningfully to their communities, but they may not know where to start. You can create opportunities for students to lead, whether in small group discussions, planning events, or leading worship.
Walk alongside them, believe in them, and take the risk to step aside and give them the chance to take the lead. Trust them with some of what you would normally do - and be there to show them it's ok when they don't get everything right. Your belief in them can ignite their passion and potential as leaders.
4. Prioritize Trusted Relationships
Above all, Gen Alpha places a high value on authenticity and connection. They build trust through relationships. They listen to the adults who genuinely care about them and over time show they can be trusted. And who show their authenticity through consistency and willingness to share truth with conviction.
Be intentional about building authentic connections with your students. Take the time to listen, affirm their experiences, and be present in their lives. By earning their trust, you become a critical source of guidance and encouragement as they grow in their faith.
