How to Hear God's "Word" for Your Year Stepping Into the New Year

Dr. Tricia Rhodes - January 14, 2025

For several years now, as the days wind down after Christmas, I take some time to ask God if He has a "word" for me for the coming year. This simple practice has profoundly shaped my journey with Him, offering guidance, encouragement, and direction for the months ahead. Let me share how God has spoken to me in the past and encourage you to seek His heart personally for the upcoming year.

Remembering God's Faithfulness Through the Years

I vividly recall 2009, the year I felt God saying He wanted me to learn how to "live loved." That year, I was utterly wrecked by His love and have never been the same. In 2018, the Spirit whispered the word "rest," and I discovered how little I truly understood about the deep rest found in God. Then, in 2019, I heard the word "faithful," a lifeline I clung to as I faced stormy seas with no shoreline in sight.

Each year, God's word has prepared me for what lay ahead, deepened my faith, and strengthened my resolve to run harder after Jesus. I've come to cherish this annual practice as a time of preparation and intimacy with God.

Steps to Seek God's Word for Your Year

If you've never sought God for a word, phrase, or theme for your year, it's a simple yet transformative way to align your heart with His purposes. Here's how you can begin:

1. Set Aside Quiet Time

Dedicate at least 15 minutes to be still and connect with God. Find a quiet space where you can focus without distractions.

2. Calm Your Soul in His Presence

Start by reading a Psalm or two, allowing the words to settle your heart. Then, offer thanks for His blessings over the past year. Gratitude creates space for hearing God's voice.

3. Offer Your Heart to God

Affirm your desire for all that He has for you in the coming year. Let your prayer be one of surrender and expectation.

4. Ask and Wait

Ask the Lord to give you a word, phrase, or theme for the year. Wait quietly, trusting that He will speak. When He does, write it down.

5. Reflect and Ponder

Take time to meditate on what you've heard. Why might God be giving you this word right now? What is He inviting you to see, embrace, or trust? Reflection often deepens understanding.

6. Press In Over the Next Few Days

Explore your word further:

  • Look up dictionary and Bible meanings.
  • Read Scriptures that include your word or theme.
  • Pray for clarity and insight as to how it applies to your life.

7. Anchor It in Scripture

Choose a Bible verse that resonates with your word. This verse will serve as a touchstone to remind you of God's guidance throughout the year.

8. Journal Your Journey

Throughout the year, return to your word in prayer and reflection. Journal your insights, experiences, and how God is using the word to shape you. At year's end, you'll gain a deeper understanding of His work in your life.

Why This Practice Matters

This simple act of seeking God's heart allows us to live with intentionality and trust in His plans. It's a tangible way to stay attuned to His voice and purposes. Over time, you'll look back and see how each word was not just for a moment but a stepping stone in your spiritual growth.

A Word for You

Will you take some time to ask God for a word this year? I encourage you to try this practice, believing that He delights in speaking to His children. When you do, you'll find yourself encouraged, grounded, and better equipped to face the year ahead.
