August always feels like the starting line. New schedules, new faces, new opportunities. You can feel the momentum building before the first bell even rings. If you care about reaching students, it is easy to jump straight into planning what this year is going to look like.
But if we are serious about seeing every campus reached, we have to start somewhere different.
We start with prayer.
When we started See You at the Pole in Burleson, Texas, there was no big strategy behind it. It was not polished or complicated. It was simply students who felt led to show up and pray. God met them there, and what started small became something none of us could have manufactured.
That is always the reminder for me. The impact did not come because we had everything figured out. It came from dependence on God.
Before the Strategy, There Was Prayer
In the Book of Acts, before anything spread, before anything multiplied, before a movement reached cities and nations, there was an upper room. A group of people gathered, waiting, praying, unified, and dependent. That is where the movement started.
If we want to see movement on campuses, we need our own version of the upper room.
Not simply a moment, but a culture.
Prayer changes the starting point. It shifts the question from, "What are we going to do this year?" to "God, what do You want to do on this campus, and how do we join You?"
Prayer reminds us that every student matters to Him, not just the students who show up at church or sit inside our circles.
Every Campus Means Every Student
If we're going to talk about "every campus," we also have to talk about every student.
The student leading in your youth group. The student sitting alone at lunch. The student who says they would never walk into a church. The students in juvenile detention or already caught up in the system.
No one is outside the reach of God, so no one should be outside the focus of our prayers.
Every campus means every student. No exceptions.
Build Your "Upper Room"
This is where prayer becomes more than a moment. It becomes a plan.
Not complicated, but intentional. Create consistent spaces where students gather to pray and seek God together. Keep it simple, but keep it steady.
The goal is not hype. The goal is culture.
Set a weekly student-led prayer gathering. Keep a visible list of campuses and schools you're covering. Create space to listen, not just speak.
If students help build it, they'll help sustain it.
Create an Every-Student Prayer Plan
Then begin widening the circle.
Build an "every student" prayer plan. Pray intentionally for students in your youth group, disconnected students, struggling students, students who feel invisible, and students in alternative schools or juvenile detention. When you do not know names, pray for spaces. God knows exactly who is there.
Do not just pray for who you see. Pray for who God sees.
Prayer Walking Changes Perspective
Prayer walks can change the way students see their campuses. Walk the hallways and places students gather. Ask God one simple question: "What are You doing here?" Then pay attention.
For youth leaders, this is where intentional leadership matters. Do not simply hope students pray. Build a culture where prayer becomes normal and expected.
Form a core team of student intercessors who consistently pray for campuses and students. Depth matters more than hype. A committed few can shift an entire campus.
A Spark, Not the Strategy
Please promote and use See You at the Pole in September as part of your plan. But remember, that day is a spark, not the strategy. It is a moment designed to point students toward a lifestyle.
One day gathers students. Daily prayer reaches them.
